Weather Station Update Greywolf PTA is working in conjunction with our school in gathering community support to fund and install a WeatherBug weather station f or our School. The WeatherBug equipment and professional installation will total over $14,800. We believe that this is important to enhance the study of the sciences at Greywolf. Part of the WeatherBug program connects with the King 5 TV's weather data system, allowing Sequim to be a regular part of their broadcasts. Greywolf students and teachers, as well as other subscribers across the nation, will be able to access information such as temperature, barometric pressure, rainfall, humidity, and surface winds, as well as gain access to other almanac information. This will help our students understand the various factors that influence weather. The program would also allow teachers to instantly monitor weather data from around the state and nation, supplementing and enhancing our social studies and math curriculum. The WeatherBug weather station will give our children "Real World" education. Greywolf Elementary has applied for a $2,500 grant from the Sequim Community Foundation (SCF). We are waiting for notification regarding qualifying for this grant. This decision is being made on June 18, 2008. As stated at our PTA general meeting in June, the school plans to purchase the WeatherBug weather station this summer (if all funds received) and to have it installed before school starts in September. If a donation is made, it goes directly to Greywolf Elementary and is deposited into the school district's restricted account for Greywolf Elementary weather station. At the June 11, 2008 general meeting, the Greywolf PTA granted $6,000 toward the WeatherBug weather station. We were able to make this happen with the help of our families and community businesses supporting our annual Greywolf PTA fundraising events. Your support allowed us to grant an additional $3,500, compared to the original funds of $2,500 planned in October 2007. In addition to our $6,000 grant, we raised $1,250 at our SENSE Auction, during our weather station Fund An Item. Our understanding, as a PTA, granting funds to our school for the WeatherBug weather station is giving our children the opportunity to build their science and math knoweldge If Greywolf receives the SCF grant and the committed funds are received in time, our school will have the time necessary to purchase the equipment needed and have it installed over summer vacation. Purchasing the system as school ends and summer break begins will provide the time needed for staff training and to incorporate this valuable asset into our schools curriculum. In addition, other schools on the Peninsula will be able to access weatherbug information, thus helping them build their science curriculum too.
Where will the weather station be located? There are several parts to the weather station. The equipment that will collect the data along with video which connects us with King 5 news, will be located on Greywolf Elementary's roof. The viewing box will be located across from our school office within the glass display case. Every classroom of our school has at least one computer that our students will be able to collect the necessary data to make calculations, graph charts, make predictions and more.
How will this program make a difference in my child's education? As many of you know, Math and Science is part of the required State WASL testing. Bringing "real world" education will help our students knowledge and growth and aide with their testing capabilities. "For the past three years, schools that participated in the Science Literacy Project provided by WeatherBug® Schools and USA TODAY have excelled in test scores and have fostered a student environment of teamwork and friendly competition." --WeatherBug for Schools
Will there be a plaque recognizing all that helped make this happen? This was suggested at our October 2007 PTA meeting. As a PTA, we believe in recognizing community support and the difference they make in being advocates to our children and their education. We will pursue this suggestion as our school get's closer to purchasing and installing the weather station.
